Debo Cox
This is a chronicle of the building of a Zenith
Zodiac CH 601 XL designed by Chris Heintz. Designed to meet the requirements
of the demanding sport pilot, the aircraft offers great performance and
capabilities, and is easy-to-fly with pilot-friendly characteristics,
including a low landing (stall) speed. The aircraft has excellent
cross-country flying capability as well as short-field performance of well
under a thousand feet. I'm building primarily from scratch, making parts as I
go along. Parts that I can't make for one reason or another will be purchased
from Zenith Aircraft. I expect the project to take from 2-5 years.
Larry Winger lives in Orange County, California and is involved in a multi-year project to scratch build a Zenith Zodiac CH 601XL in his two-car garage. Larry has also chosen to power it with a Corvair 164cid 100hp engine converted for aircraft use following the detailed conversion process perfected by William Wynne. Tim Garrett. Started his Zodiac XL - Jabiru 3300 in December 2001 and made first flight in November 2006. Tim is living with multiple sclerosis (MS) and will be using his airplane for MS awareness. André van den Elsen can't stop building aeroplane's from designer Chris Heintz~ his 701 is complete and now he has started on his 601XL. Lance Gingell - has a well laid out website, showing his kit building progress along with the amount of time spent on each part. The pictures of his progress will be able to help others in the building process. IF your stuck on a spot have a look here for help. Brent Battles - A great website and builder from near Asheville, NCScott Laughlin - Scott is currently scratch building an 601 XL . There are lots of good photos of how he is tackling the fabrication and construction. Scratch builders can learn a lot from visiting this siteLarry McFarland - Larry is a machinist scratch building a 601 HDS. From the sound of it he will be flying soon. Larry has some excellent solutions for people who have to make their own parts. Great site!Dave Gardea I thought, why not learn how to construct an aircraft out of sheet aluminum .. all that riveting can't be that difficult with the right tools. What sold me on the Zodiac was the rudder class I attended last June (2005) at the Zenith Aircraft Company factory in Mexico, MO Kevin Bonds - I am building an experimental aircraft. NO It's not radio controlled or a toy (everyone thinks that at first). It is a real airplane. Yes . . .I do plan on flying it! No . . .I'm not crazy. Well Maybe, but I have lots of Company!!! Michel Therrien - Michel is a Canadian builder from Quebec. He is currently scratch building an 601 HD. Michel has done an excellent job of documenting his progress on his website.Bill Sewell - Bill is a 601 XL kit builder from the USA. He has nicely documented his progress thus far with great photos nicely organized on his site. Check it out. (Best in Microsoft Explorer)Gig Giacona - Gig is a Zodiac 601 XL kit builder and very knowledgeable contributor to the Matronics Zenith list. He has created an excellent website with great photos and information. Worth a long look!Dave Nimigon - Dave is building a 601XL from scratch and if his website is any indication it will be one nice addition to the Zenith family of planes. Bill Morelli - Bill has been flying his kit built HDS for over 3 years and has 330 hours and closing in on 500 landings. His site has some construction tips as well as some problems he encountered with the Stratus Subaru installation.Dave Alberti - Dave built a 601 HD
with a Rotax 912ULS from a Kit he received in Dec. 1999. He earned his airworthiness Certificate in July
2003 and is now "Flying and loving it!" Lots of great
construction photos.
