Bending a Nose Skin

From the Boys at www.ch601.org

Click here for a complete write up on this procedure. Nose Skin.htm

Start

Once the Nose Skin is cut to 900mm we started adding a scrap piece of wood to the edge.

Edge

Edge board is held on with 300mph tape.

Other side

We applied a board to the other edge of the Nose Skin with Duck Tape.

Flip

The Nose Skin was flipped over for the next step.

Straps

Time to get the straps out.

Straps under

The straps were fed under the skin.

Attaching Straps

Time to start bending.

All attached

All the red straps attached.

Adjusting Straps

Bit by bit we adjust the straps.

All Done

Yup! That's right. We're all done adjusting the red straps.

See Boards

Here you can see why we installed to boards to protect the edges of the Nose Skin. Can't have any smilies now can we! :-)

Surprise!

Yup! We have more straps. This time we used black plastic straps used in packing (1/2 inch wide).

Adding Straps

We needed to apply 14 of the black straps to have the tension applied in an even fashion.

Straps

All 14 straps attached now.

Tension

Time to start shortening the black straps. One person pushes down on the wood (never on the aluminum) and the other tightens the strap.

Red Straps

Don't forget to remove the (now useless) red straps.

Done! Ready to Bend.

That's it! All the black straps are tightened. We're done with them.

Tunnel Vision

We couldn't resist taking this picture. It looks way cool!

View

Here is another view of the tightened straps.

Promotion

David gets a promotion to Domestic duties on the low Pile carpet! Don't even THINK about using shag for this.

Guess !!

Do you see it comming???

Back

Here is a picture of David's table. The plans for this building table are in the Homemade tool section on this website.

You guessed it!

Yup. Thats right. We're using the table as a brake !!!

Stop Blocks

We set stop blocks to ensure that when we stepped on the backside of the table, we would not completely squish the Nose Skin. 58 mm blocks gave a great radius on the nose.

Heavy Table

By the way, don't try this alone!!

Measurement

After squashing the Nose skins, all of them had the same amount of spring back.

Done!!!

The nose skin now has the finished shape.

:-)

Not a single :-) in the whole skin !!!

Work Of Art

Can this get any better? I think Not !!!!

Straps removed

Perfection, All 4 are the same, 2 for Davids 601 and 2 for mine.

Time

The first one took about 2 hours the last one took about 20 minutes. So pretty much standard for a Zenith Part. The first plane takes 1500hrs the 4th plane takes 500hrs.
