Homemade Edge Marker
Starting on my wing construction for my 601XL (N445ML) I decided to finally build a marking gauge - I've been wishing I had one for months now. I first cut a piece of 3/4 x 1/8 aluminum flat stock about 4 inches long. Clamped it in the vise at 1 3/8 from one end and bent it to 90 degrees. I hack sawed down each side of the short end to make it 3/8 inches wide on that end. On the long end, I drilled two 5/32 holes in the center, 1 1/4 inches apart. Then I took my dremel with a cut-off blade and cut a 5/32 slot in the aluminum, connecting the two holes. I grabbed a scrap of 3/4 by 1 1/2 pine that was 5 1/2 inches long and mounted the angle on top with two pan-head screws. Space the screws so that you can slide the aluminum angle back and forth. I then placed an ultra-fine SHARPIE next to the 3/8 side of the aluminum angle and, using heat shrink tubing, attached the sharpie to the angle. ( I believe a couple of rubber bands or masking tape would work just as well ). A bit of adjustment, tighten the two screws and voila, an edge marker gauge to mark those wing ribs! Wish I had made this the day I started the fuselage! Mike Full name not available But
