It was never our intention to make www.ch601.org a personal builders website, others like Scott and Larry already have an excellent site for new builders. But we have had many requests to post our progress, so for all of you, here is a picture walkthrough of Davids progress. As time permits David will add comment to each pic.

Spar Cap Chromating

Look at the Shine on that spar cap

Chromating Spar Caps

After polishing with scotch bright pads and soapy water then rinsing with lots of clear water I air dried the spar caps and applied the Chromate with foam brushes.

Spar Web Drying Rack

I know - it looks just like a picnic table.

After scrubbing with soapy water and a scotchbright pad and lots of rinsing this as a good place to let them dry.

Nice shop of how the centre spar webs line up.

Centre Spar Spacers

The spacer fits in the 4130 tube I used for the rudder pedals.

Trimming centre spar spacers.

If the table is square to the sanding wheel and the tube is butted up against an angle clamped at right angles to the wheel, the face of the spacer will be square.

Spar Temporary Fasteners

For all drilling and temporary fastening in the spars, I used 8-32 and 10-28 machine screws with wing nuts. Worked really well!

Flange Marking

We made a flange marking tool that we could run around the outside of a rib form block and held the pen 20 mm from the edge.

Completed Flaps

They are hanging from the ceiling by plastic packaging straps. Works great for light weight parts.

Pilot Side Aileron

Aileron Tip

I had to redo these a couple of times using trial and error. The dimension from the plans at the time I made the aileron tips was dead wrong.

Wing Nose Skin

This is not bent yet - just held in a compressed C-shape by plastic packaging straps prior to using the table and the flor to bend the nose skin. See the Builders Resources section for a drawing and explanation of how this was done.

Rudder Assembly Frame

I borrowed this jig from Mark Townsend. If you make one of these for your rudder therre is no way you can build any twist into your rudder. Works Great! Ask Mark for details on construction.
